A Moveable Feast:

The Basque Country

June 25th - July 1st, 2022

This is Your Invitation to a Unique Travel Experience

Join us as we explore one of our favorite parts of the world.

“Where do you miss going the most?” Was a common question over the last two years. Thankfully, that question is once again “Where are you going next?” but the answer remains the same- The Basque Country.

Straddling the border of France and Spain, The Basque region features the best of what makes those two countries so special, along with a culture, history, and feel that is uniquely its own.

From our chateau on the French side of the border, you’ll be part of wonderful group of like minded travelers and spend a week taking in the best of the Basque Coast, from luxury beach resorts to laid-back surf towns to the bucolic countryside and charming villages and markets, all while enjoying some of the best food and drink anywhere on the planet.

The Chateau

Our home for the week will be a traditional French Chateau that’s steeped in history- construction of the original castle dates back to the 15th century, while the current main house was built in a neo-18th century style. The lovingly maintained and decorated Chateau features ten bedrooms, modernized baths, multiple formal and informal living areas, wi-fi, swimming pool, sprawling gardens and a full staff, all surrounded by a bastide village first established in 1289.

The Itinerary

All Roving Hotel trips are fully curated, meaning you don’t have to think about a single thing from the moment you arrive until the moment you depart, save for what souvenirs you’d like to bring home or what you’d like to drink.

Our mornings begin with a leisurely breakfast prepared by our staff while you relax on the grounds of the Chateau and prepare for the day. Our chauffeurs tend to arrive around ten or eleven to take us on that day’s adventure- never too far away of a drive, but always someplace new and exciting.

We’ll return to the chateau by late afternoon for some downtime before the cocktail hour that leads us into that night’s decadent dinner- be they at local gourmet restaurants or prepared in house by our rotating teams of private chefs. And then the next day, we do it all over again.

Excursions

While we like to keep the specifics of what each day will entail a bit of a secret, rest assured you will experience first hand and in grand fashion the highlights of what makes this region so spectacular.

You’ll see the grand palace of Biarritz, which turned a once sleepy fishing village into one of the chicest beach resorts of the Belle Epoque and also happens to be the birthplace of surfing in Europe, where to this day board toting beachgoers mingle with the designer clad denizens of the oceanfront casino.

You’ll explore the classic French markets in countryside spa towns famed for their natural thermal baths and have amazing lunches in typical Basque villages where “farm to table” isn’t a marketing gimmick but rather their way of life.

You’ll go on a Txikiteo- a pub crawl through the unforgettable pintxos bars of San Sebastian where you’ll understand immediately why Anthony Bourdain said “there is no better place to eat in Europe” and we’d likely argue anywhere in the world.

All of our excursions- though highly recommended- are fully optional, and should you choose to stay behind in the Chateau to relax or catch up on work, our staff will be there to cater to your every need.

The Evenings

Though the days are all memorable, it’s the nights that our past travelers have told us they love the most. Think of your favorite dinner party you’ve ever been to- in a beautiful setting, with incredible food, unlimited wines and cocktails, stimulating conversation, engaging games, abundant laughter and enjoyable people. Now imagine that party lasted for a luxurious, perfectly thought out week right down to the last detail, and you’ll begin to have an idea of what The Roving Hotel is all about.

The People

We can find magnificent houses, plan great meals and tours, and curate a really wonderful time, but in the end, it’s the people you meet through The Roving Hotel that make it so truly unique. The weeks are specifically designed to allow you to bond with your fellow travelers, a fascinating group of adventurous spirits from around the world. While the experience may only last for one magical week, the friendships you form will last a lifetime.
